Finish is plastic-y and not very functional

The finish does an excellent job of looking great, but the material used to coat the the tools scrapes off easily under use, and in a plastic-y way. Getting a leak-proof seal is one of the key jobs of a cocktail shaker, and scuffs and scrapes are part of that process, but the finish on the gunmetal set clumps up on itself in a way that's reminiscent of a plastic film. It does this after the first or second use. Review for each tool: Shaker - The shaker is cleanly shaped and pleasantly weighted in the hand, but struggles to form a good seal, and is the tool that most clearly shows what the finish is and why it's not very functional. I'd guess it struggles to seal either from the thickness of the metal or the way the finish clumps up (or both.) Examples of how the finish clumps and scrapes off can be seen in the photos where the strainer cap would seal to the top piece and also where the top piece would seal to the bottom tin. Wear seen in the photos is from just a handful of cocktails, I stopped using the shaker after that. Jigger - Jigger would be a fantastic jigger without the finish. It's cleanly made, feels great in the hand, has no noticeable imperfections to the eye or touch, and has very clear, clean measurement markings etched into the inside. I used this as my primary jigger for over a year and it's just now starting to lose it's finish, but it's coming off in small blotches with that plastic-y look. All tools have only been hand-washed with warm water and regular liquid dish soap, with no abrasive scrubbers, and immediately after each use to prevent prolonged contact with acidic citrus juices or alcohol, so this is what normal wear looks like. Hawthorne Strainer - Gorgeous appearance out of the box with minimal imperfections, much like the other equipment, but I only used it one time before noticing the wear on the shaker. After that I was worried that the finish would scrape off from making contact with a shaker or mixing glass. I also didn't want the finish wearing off into my drink every time I poured it, especially if whatever the finish is made of dissolves faster from ethanol or citrus juice acidity. Barspoon - Very cleanly made, well balanced, and the spiraling in the handle is uniform with almost no imperfections. I used it for a month or two before deciding I didn't want beverages making direct contact with the finish. Some of the things you'll see folks doing with barspoons, like cracking ice and stirring herbs or lemon peels into dry sugar crystals, will be hard on certain finishes. But with the plastic-y finish on the Gunmetal tools I'd be worried about the finish scraping off into the beverage. Not to mention if someone new to cocktails found a recipe or garnish that called for the barspoon to be exposed to heat. In short, I wouldn't have bought this set if I had known more about the finish. The "polished black gunmetal finish" comes off in a plastic-y way that looks bad and that I wouldn't want my food around. Most of the tools in this set would be fine tools if it weren't for the finish material, but I would guess the shaker would struggle to seal regardless of finish. I think that might be an issue with the material flexibility. Long-winded, but this is the review I would have loved to see when I was browsing bar tools.

A Bartender's Essential Set

I love the 4-in-1 set. I purchased the gunmetal set... what I liked the most is that the shaker is super heavyweight and adequately mixes cocktails with easy. The additional items in the set are super helpful to have as well.

Nice Quality--But Somewhat Flawed

Very much like the set, however, the container leaks when mixing egg-whites to a craft cocktail concoction in the "shake" portion of the preparation. Something about the egg whites simply oozes through. Certainly a flaw that drops my satisfaction from a 5 rating.
